This is a sidewalk scene in Selma, Alabama in the month of Decemeber 1935 and photographed by Walker Evans. This shows
how the men of The Great Depression worked, how stores were so open. Men just sat there and awaited a customer... dogs roamed the streets. People sat in chairs wating for a shoe shine as other men just hung around outside and smoked cigars

This photo is in an urban setting, a sidewalk in Selma, Alabama. It was taken by Walker Evans. There are about 6 adults in this picture, all wearing hats and coats, so this was most likely taken in the winter. It is outside of a grocery store (The Trading Post), and looks to besurrounded by other buildings, probably other stores. This pictures tone is a rather neutral tone, as it does not depict a overtly positive or negative event. If I were to ask the photographer 2 questions, the first one would be what did the surrounding area look like? The second question would be why did you take a picture of this place, specifically? -Matt

This is a picture of dryed up corn in Eutaw, Alabama. It was taken by Dorothea Lange in 1936. It is outside of what looks like a farm. It was taken during the day, in a rural stting. There are no people in this photo. There are 2 wooden structures in the backround. They may be houses. The buildings overloook the field where the corn is drying. The dying corn may be due to drought. This picture has a more negative tone, due to the drying crops. This imagery has a hopeless feel, because the corn is dying. If I could ask the photographer 2 questions the first one would be why did you take a picture with this angle; what were you trying to show? And the second one would be why is the corn drying up; is it due to drought or something else? -Matt

This is a picture of Main street of Greensboro, Alabama. It was taken by Jack Delano in 1941. It is daytime in the picture, and on the outside. It is an urban area. There is one person walking to a car, and a few others standing outside of a building. It was May when this photo was taken. There are many buildings in this picture that look to be stores. They are all close together. There are many parked cars along the street. The picture, once again, has a rather neutral tone. It doesn't really say anything good or bad about the time period. If I could ask the photographer 2 questions, the first would be why did you take a picture here, and at this angle? THe second one would be what does the surrounding area look like; is it a more urban place? -Matt

In this picture it shows a group of workers waiting in line to get something to eat at the coffee shop in Newyork city, Newyork for free. Back then in the great depression donuts only coast 5-20 cents to get a donut; now days donuts coast about $1.09. But in this picture these donuts are free for workers. Certin companies volenteered to make free food for the hard working who only get a certin amount of money and cant aford enough food.

Certin people in the depression couldn't aford houses so lived in huge families or makde there own shelters like in this picture. With there old possesions they would make there own shelters and try to survive.

Going to school was a honor; also back then going to harvard collage only coasted a lil over 2000.00 dollars.
